Open Water Training

The following is information about open water swimming at Fritton Lake:

Over the past 3 years we have run regular weekly coaching sessions at Fritton Lake during the summer for ASA club swimmers aged 11 to 18.  These have been held on Sunday mornings from 8:30am to 10:00am with many using the opportunity to prepare for the East Region OW Championships in the middle of July.  These sessions cover such aspects as open water skills, tactics and strategies.

This year, for a number of reasons, it is proving more difficult to establish a regular Sunday session and so I am planning to move these sessions from a Sunday to a Friday evening from 6:00pm to 8:00pm starting on the 9th June (sorry for the late notice).  This does mean though that sessions can be held on a more regular basis without disruption from other activities at the lake.

In previous years attendance at these sessions has varied greatly - i.e. last year it peaked at 44 swimmers in one session and went down to just 5 swimmers on some weeks.  This makes it difficult to establish a regular group and deliver a progressive training program and so this year I will be looking for swimmers to sign up for 6 weeks at a time.  I appreciate that this may not be appropriate for some swimmers who prefer to dip in and out or who have other commitments some weekends.  Therefore I want to offer a number of other options, alongside the regular weekly coaching sessions, which may be more suitable for some clubs and swimmers.

1) Any club swimmer that is over 12 years of age is welcome to come along to our regular weekly sessions.  These are on the following days and  times each week:

Tuesdays 5:30pm to 8:00pm

Thursdays 5:30pm to 8:00pm

Saturday 8:00am to 10:30am

These sessions are supervised but not coached.  Swimmers need to register, which is free of charge, and then swim fees are £6.00 per session.

2) If clubs want to book the facilities for their club only, whether thats a single session a series of sessions or a camp, then we can accommodate that.  Dates and times can be agreed to suit the club and coaching can be provided by club coaches or an agreed program delivered by our open water coaches.  Contact me for more information about this option.

Finally please note that the first coaching session will be Friday 9th June and NOT Sunday 11th June as previously discussed with some.

Many thanks Simon
